Paul Russo, the CEO of KCB Group, has been recognized as the African Business Leader of the Year by Africa Leadership Magazine. This prestigious award celebrates his transformative vision and the significant contributions he’s made to the African banking sector.
Russo emerged victorious after a rigorous competition that evaluated leaders across Africa, where his leadership qualities, commitment to innovation, and contributions to socio-economic development were key criteria.
Russo joined the group in 2014 as the Group Human Resources Director. In 2019, he was promoted to Group Regional Businesses Director, overseeing nine subsidiaries within the group. As the CEO of KCB Group, Russo replaced Joshua Oigara who led the group for the previous nine years.
Since taking the helm, Russo has overseen a period of remarkable growth for KCB Group. The group’s asset value has skyrocketed to a staggering Sh2 trillion, solidifying its position as a financial powerhouse in East Africa.

Furthermore, under Russo’s leadership, KCB reclaimed its title as the most profitable bank in the region. This achievement was fueled by a phenomenal 69% rise in Q1 net profit, reaching a staggering Sh16.5 billion.
This growth isn’t just about financial metrics – KCB’s brand strength also continues to soar, scoring an impressive 91.5 brand strength index score in 2024, a noteworthy improvement over the previous year score of 90.4.
