NSE 2026 Investment Challenge Goes Live on Soko Play as Virtual Trading Platform Targets 30,000 New Investors

NSE 2026 Investment Challenge Live on Soko Play

The Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) has launched the 2026 Investment Challenge, a financial literacy competition designed to introduce more Kenyans, especially young people, to capital markets through simulated trading.

The annual competition, hosted on the NSE’s virtual trading platform Soko Play, allows participants to experience real-time equity and derivatives trading in a risk-free environment while competing for a share of a KES 200,000 prize pool.

Registration for the challenge is open through the NSE Academy digital portal, with the competition targeting university students, tertiary institution learners and aspiring retail investors seeking practical exposure to financial markets. The NSE Investment Challenge is implemented in partnership with NCBA Investment Bank as part of efforts to promote investment awareness, financial education and wider participation in Kenya’s capital markets.

NSE Investment Challenge Opens Real-Time Market Simulation

The 2026 Investment Challenge officially began on July 6, 2026, and will run until June 2027, giving participants an extended period to develop and test investment strategies. Unlike traditional financial literacy programmes that focus mainly on theory, the NSE initiative uses gamification to replicate actual market experiences. Participants receive virtual funds that they can use to buy and sell simulated securities while tracking their performance against other investors on a leaderboard.

The NSE expects more than 30,000 participants to take part in this year’s competition, reflecting growing interest in investment education among Kenya’s youth and emerging retail investors. Although the competition is designed primarily for Kenyan participants, the platform also allows global participation, enabling individuals outside the country to learn about Nairobi’s capital markets.

Soko Play Introduces Stocks, Bonds and Derivatives Trading

The 2026 Investment Challenge comes with major upgrades to the Soko Play platform, expanding the range of investment products available for simulation. Participants can now practice trading beyond traditional equities, with the platform introducing simulations for:

  • Stocks listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange
  • Bonds
  • Derivatives
  • Options trading

The expanded product offering is expected to expose participants to a wider range of investment instruments and improve their understanding of portfolio diversification and risk management. The upgraded platform also features a real-time simulated order book designed to mirror actual NSE price movements. The feature allows users to develop intraday trading strategies while experiencing market dynamics similar to those faced by real investors.

NSE Lowers Entry Barriers for New Investors

To make the competition more accessible, the NSE has reduced trading restrictions on Soko Play, allowing participants to practice buying as little as a single share instead of following the standard 100-share minimum requirement applied in some market transactions. The move is aimed at encouraging beginners who may not have significant investment capital to gain practical experience before entering real financial markets.

The platform has also introduced team-building capabilities for the first time, allowing participants to form groups of up to five members. Teams can create joint investment strategies, manage portfolios collectively and compete on team leaderboards, adding a collaborative element to the investment learning experience.

Winners to Share KES 200,000 Prize Pool

Top performers in the NSE 2026 Investment Challenge will compete for a total prize pool of KES 200,000, with leading individual participants eligible for cash rewards of up to KES 100,000. Beyond financial rewards, outstanding participants may also receive career opportunities, including potential internship placements within Kenya’s financial services sector.

The NSE is also providing continuous learning support through expert-led webinars held every two to three weeks throughout the competition. The sessions will cover key investment topics including:

  • Risk management
  • Portfolio construction
  • Market analysis
  • Use of leverage and margins
  • Understanding capital market trends

The educational sessions are intended to help participants move beyond competition rankings and develop practical investment skills.

How to Register for NSE 2026 Investment Challenge

Interested participants can join the competition by registering through the NSE Academy digital platform. The registration process involves:

  • Visiting the NSE Academy portal.
  • Creating a user profile.
  • Signing up for the 2026 Investment Challenge.
  • Accessing Soko Play to begin simulated trading.

The NSE has kept participation costs low, with the registration fee heavily subsidised or waived to ensure that financial barriers do not prevent students and young investors from participating.
