Family Bank New Chairman, Architect Francis Gitau, Passes Away in the USA

The Family Bank Board of Directors and Management have announced the passing of their newly appointed Chairman, Architect Francis Gitau Mungai, who passed away while receiving treatment in the United States of America.

Arch. Gitau Mungai served on the Board of Family Bank Limited since 2016 and had been serving as Vice Chairman for the last two years before his recent appointment as Chairman. He chaired the Board Credit Committee and the Board Human Resources Committee, and he was a member of the Nominations and Governance Committee. Additionally, he was a director of Pesa Pap Digital Ltd, a subsidiary of Family Bank Ltd.

Before his formal involvement with Family Bank, Architect Gitau had been a dedicated supporter of the bank since 1996, both as a customer and as a professional.

Gitau’s professional journey was marked by significant accomplishments. He was the founding partner of Aaki Consultants, Architects, and Urban Designers, and had earlier worked with prominent firms such as Triad Architects in Nairobi and Urban Innovation Group (UIG) in Los Angeles.

His career, spanning over 30 years, included leadership roles such as Chairman of the Architectural Association of Kenya (AAK) and Director and Chairman of the Building and Infrastructure Board of the Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA).

Gitau held a Master’s Degree in Architecture and Urban Design from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and a Bachelor of Architecture degree with First Class Honours from the University of Nairobi. He was a Fellow of the Architectural Association of Kenya (FAAK) and registered by the Board of Registration of Architects & Quantity Surveyors (BORAQS) in Kenya.

Furthermore, Gitau lectured at the University of Nairobi’s Architecture and Building Sciences Department. His focus on Architectural and Urban Design Studios, as well as Professional Practices and management, emphasized his dedication to education and mentoring future architects.

His leadership and advocacy for the integration of private sector interests in government policies were notable. His well-rounded character was reflected in his active participation in sports such as golf and mountain climbing.

About a month ago, Family Bank named Gitau the new board chairman, pending regulatory approvals. He was set to succeed Wilfred Kiboro. Gitau’s untimely passing is a significant loss to Family Bank and the architectural community.
