New UBA Bancassurance Committee

The Uganda Bankers’ Association (UBA) has appointed new leadership to its Bancassurance Technical Committee, bringing together bancassurance practitioners from member financial institutions to advance the sector’s agenda in Uganda.

The new UBA Bancassurance Committee will be led by Sylvester Rokani of Exim Bank Uganda as Chairperson, with Jonathan Lumu of Housing Finance Bank Uganda serving as Vice Chairperson.

Vian Alituha of NCBA Group has been appointed Secretary, while Cate Namyenya Mubiru of KCB Bank Uganda will serve as Publicity Secretary. The committee also includes Frank Kalinzi of Pearl Bank Uganda and Kaahwa Albert of Tropical Bank Ltd as members.

New UBA Bancassurance Committee Leadership

Rokani, who is currently Bancassurance Manager at Exim Bank Uganda Limited, has nearly 20 years of experience across commercial banking, asset financing and insurance. His experience includes developing client premium-financing models, improving insurance claims processes and implementing risk management structures for vehicle and asset protection.

Lumu, who serves as Manager and Principal Officer of Bancassurance at Housing Finance Bank Uganda, previously worked as Bancassurance Manager and Principal Officer at NCBA Bank Uganda. His responsibilities have included aligning insurance targets with bank corporate strategies and managing compliance with statutory requirements.

Alituha, a Bancassurance Officer and Principal Practitioner at NCBA Bank Uganda, will take up the Secretary role. Her work includes participation in technical initiatives focused on developing customer-facing insurance models. As Secretary, she will support the committee’s operational structure, sector compliance and documentation across the UBA network.

Mubiru, Bancassurance Head and Lead Practitioner at KCB Bank Uganda, will serve as Publicity Secretary. Her role will include public communications, stakeholder awareness and marketing initiatives around bancassurance solutions.

Kalinzi, a Principal Bancassurance Specialist at Pearl Bank Uganda, and Albert, a Bancassurance Professional at Tropical Bank Ltd, complete the committee leadership team.

UBA Bancassurance Committee’s Role

The UBA Bancassurance Technical Committee serves as an industry advisory and operational body bringing together practitioners from member financial institutions. Its mandate includes advancing bancassurance in Uganda and supporting the integration of banking and insurance services through the country’s financial institutions.

One of its responsibilities is regulatory alignment and policy advisory. The committee acts as a liaison between commercial banks, UBA and sector regulators, including the Bank of Uganda and the Insurance Regulatory Authority of Uganda.

It also reviews legislative and regulatory frameworks affecting bancassurance and addresses compliance issues affecting member institutions.

The committee is also responsible for supporting market development and product innovation within bancassurance. Its areas of focus include advising banks on the use of digital marketing, data analytics and core banking applications to simplify insurance distribution.

The committee also supports the development of insurance products distributed through banking channels, including motor, agricultural and life insurance products. Improving operational processes, including the use of digital technologies to streamline insurance claims, is another area within its mandate.

The committee is expected to support capacity building and knowledge sharing among banking and insurance practitioners. This includes addressing gaps in technical expertise and public awareness through industry forums such as the annual UBA Bancassurance Forum.

The committee also works with institutions such as the Uganda Institute of Banking and Financial Services (UIBFS) on professional development initiatives, including insurance-related certification programmes for bank staff.

The committee’s mandate also covers the growth of bancassurance as a source of non-funded income for financial institutions. It supports member banks in increasing Gross Written Premium (GWP) penetration through banking networks and expanding bancassurance operations across their regional branch networks.

The newly appointed committee will therefore coordinate industry practitioners from different financial institutions around regulatory compliance, product development, digital distribution, professional development and the expansion of bancassurance services in Uganda.
