How Abdi Mohamed Rose From a Garissa Teller to Lead Absa and I&M Bank Kenya

Abdi Mohamed’s 32-year journey through East African banking stands as a striking example of long-term career ascent in the region’s corporate sector. Starting as a front-line teller in a small Barclays Bank Kenya branch, he rose through operational, regional, and executive roles to lead two major competing Kenyan institutions, capping a career marked by rebrandings, digital overhauls, and strong financial results.

Raised in Balambala along the Tana River, Abdi Mohamed entered banking far from Nairobi’s boardrooms. In 1994, he joined Barclays Bank Kenya’s Garissa branch as a teller. That ground-level start gave him direct experience in retail operations, customer relationships, and the mechanics of everyday banking.

He advanced steadily within the Barclays and later Absa ecosystem, taking on progressively larger responsibilities. As Chief Operating Officer for Barclays Bank Kenya, Abdi Mohamed restructured technology and strategic functions. He later served as Operations Efficiency Manager at Barclays Global Retail and Commercial Banking headquarters in London and directed retail expansion in Zambia.

From 2020 to 2023, Abdi Mohamed served as Managing Director and CEO of Absa Bank Tanzania. In that role, he oversaw the complex transition and rebranding of the business from its legacy Barclays identity to Absa, managing operational, digital, and cultural changes. For driving growth after a period of stagnation, Global Brands Magazine named him Best Banking CEO in Tanzania in both 2020 and 2021.

In May 2023, he returned to Nairobi as Managing Director and CEO of Absa Bank Kenya. During his approximately three-year tenure, which ended in June 2026, the bank accelerated digital transformation, grew non-funded income streams such as asset management and bancassurance, and reduced its cost-to-income ratio from 41% to 37%. The share price roughly doubled over the period.

Financial results under his leadership included a 27.5% rise in net profit to KES 20.9 billion in 2024, followed by further growth to KES 22.9 billion in 2025. Total assets expanded 10% to KES 571.3 billion. Dividend payouts increased 17% to KES 11.1 billion in 2025, accompanying a 56.2% rally in the bank’s stock on the Nairobi Securities Exchange.

Earlier, as COO in Kenya, Mohamed had driven core technology upgrades and multi-channel digital systems that helped bring the cost-to-income ratio to 36.5%. In Zambia, as Retail Banking Director, he led expansion that positioned the bank as a market leader.

Beyond individual institutions, Mohamed contributed to industry bodies. He served on the Kenya Bankers Association Governing Council and on the board of Integrated Payment Services Limited, supporting the development of PesaLink, Kenya’s interbank real-time transfer system. In 2024 he received the African Brand Leadership Award for corporate stewardship and support for SME financing.

After concluding his long tenure with Absa, Abdi Mohamed was appointed Chief Executive Officer of I&M Bank Kenya. Following Central Bank of Kenya approval, he assumed the role effective October 5, 2026. The move places him at the helm of a tier-1 competitor tasked with advancing market expansion, digital scaling, and deeper customer relationships.
