How Joakim Reiter Connected Vodafone’s Global Strategy to Vodacom’s African Operations

How Joakim Reiter Connected Vodafone’s Global Strategy to Vodacom’s African Operations

As Joakim Reiter prepares to step down from Vodafone Group at the end of 2026, his involvement with Vodacom, Vodafone’s majority-owned African subsidiary, stands as a notable chapter in his nearly decade-long corporate career.

Reiter’s primary role has been as Vodafone Group’s Chief External and Corporate Affairs Officer since 2017, where he oversaw public policy, regulation, communications, security, sustainability, and stakeholder relations across Europe and Africa. This Group-level mandate naturally encompassed Vodacom, South Africa’s largest mobile operator and a key pillar of Vodafone’s African footprint.

In October 2023, Joakim Reiter’s connection to Vodacom deepened when he was appointed a non-executive director of Vodacom Group Limited, effective around October 6. He also joined the company’s Social and Ethics Committee. The appointment followed the resignation of fellow director Sunil Sood and was welcomed by the Vodacom board as bringing senior Group expertise in external affairs and regulation.

As a non-executive director, Reiter contributed board-level oversight rather than day-to-day operational management. His background in high-level diplomacy, including previous roles as Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations and Deputy Secretary-General of UNCTAD, positioned him to advise on policy, regulatory engagement, sustainability, and ethical governance issues relevant to Vodacom’s markets in South Africa and other African countries.

Throughout his broader Vodafone tenure, Reiter helped shape the Group’s approach to African markets, where connectivity, digital inclusion, and regulatory relationships remain critical. Vodafone Group CEO Margherita Della Valle specifically praised his work “with governments, policymakers and regulators across Europe and Africa” in the announcement of his departure.

Reiter’s board role at Vodacom has been relatively recent, spanning roughly three years by the time of his planned exit from Vodafone Group on December 31, 2026. Any transition arrangements for his Vodacom directorship have not yet been detailed publicly.

Vodacom, listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, remains one of Africa’s leading telecom operators, serving tens of millions of customers and playing a central role in mobile money, data services, and digital transformation across the continent. Reiter’s dual perspective, from Vodafone Group headquarters and the Vodacom boardroom, reflected the close strategic alignment between the parent company and its African subsidiary during a period of evolving regulatory and competitive pressures.
