KCB Bank Tanzania Launches KCB LIPA to Enable Unified Payments across Banks and Mobile Networks

KCB LIPA

KCB Bank Tanzania has rolled out KCB Lipa, a digital payment solution aimed at transforming how businesses collect payments. With the system, merchants can now receive payments from all banks and mobile networks using one unified QR code, removing the need for multiple tills or separate mobile money integrations.

The solution, KCB Tanzania’s latest merchant innovation, is designed to support small and medium enterprises by streamlining how customer payments are collected, recorded, and settled. Through KCB Lipa, businesses benefit from instant payment confirmation and direct settlement into their business accounts.

Built on Bank of Tanzania’s TANQR Framework

The launch of KCB Lipa is anchored on the national interoperability standard introduced by Bank of Tanzania, known as TANQR. The framework enables financial service providers across the country to operate within a shared QR code ecosystem, allowing customers to transact seamlessly regardless of their bank or mobile wallet provider.

For KCB Bank Tanzania, integration into TANQR ensures that merchants using KCB Lipa can receive payments from all banks and mobile networks without compatibility barriers. This move supports a more connected payments environment, where transactions are completed through a standardized and secure system.

How KCB Lipa Works For Merchants

Through KCB Lipa, merchants are issued a single digital or printed TANQR code that customers can scan to make payments instantly. Once a transaction is completed, funds are credited directly into the merchant’s account held with KCB Bank Tanzania.

To access the KCB Lipa service, businesses are required to provide a valid Business License or Tax Identification Number (TIN).  The onboarding process includes:

  1. Opening a corporate or business account at any KCB Bank Tanzania branch
  2. Requesting activation of the merchant payment service
  3. Receiving and displaying a TANQR code at the point of sale

After setup, payments flow directly into the merchant’s account without manual transfers between platforms. Existing retail customers can also track their finances, send payments, or handle transfers digitally by downloading the official KCB Mobile TZ App via the Google Play Store or Apple App Store, or dial *150*22# . The system is designed to simplify payment acceptance for businesses that previously had to manage multiple payment platforms separately.

Key Features of KCB Lipa

One of the core advantages of KCB Lipa is its ability to enable merchants to receive payments from all banks and mobile networks in real time. The system eliminates fragmentation by consolidating multiple payment rails into a single acceptance point.

Another key feature is instant settlement. Funds are transferred directly into merchant accounts without delays, improving cash flow management for businesses of all sizes. KCB Tanzania has also positioned the solution as cost-friendly for merchants, with no transaction charges applied on payments received through the system. In addition, the platform reduces reliance on cash handling, lowering risks associated with theft and counterfeit currency. Each transaction is automatically recorded, giving businesses structured digital statements that simplify reconciliation and audit processes.

Addressing Fragmentation in Merchant Payments

Before the introduction of unified systems like TANQR, many businesses in Tanzania were required to maintain multiple payment solutions to accommodate customers from different providers. This often meant displaying several QR codes or managing different till numbers for banks and mobile money operators.

With KCB Lipa, KCB Bank Tanzania has consolidated these fragmented systems into a single QR code, making it easier for merchants to receive payments from all banks and mobile networks. This shift reduces operational complexity and improves the customer payment experience at the point of sale. The system also helps reduce manual reconciliation work, as all transactions are centralized within one banking environment.

Security and Cashflow Improvements

The launch of KCB Lipa also addresses long-standing challenges associated with cash-heavy business operations. Many SMEs in Tanzania continue to rely on physical cash, exposing them to risks such as theft, counterfeit notes, and incomplete sales records.

KCB Tanzania, by digitizing payments, will provide merchants with a secure and traceable payment system. Every transaction processed through KCB Lipa is recorded digitally, creating a clear financial history that can support future credit assessments and business financing applications. This structured payment flow also helps businesses manage cashflow more effectively, as funds are deposited directly into their accounts without manual intervention.
